On Making A Difference No Matter How Small
Sometimes we feel like no matter what we do, we aren't making that big of a difference. Today, I want to share with you a poem that's had a huge effect on my life and that I personally go back to any time I feel I'm not making a difference! I hope it reminds you that in the end, it's the little things that do make up the big things in life.
I know there are many versions of this poem floating around online, but this is the one I first heard years ago and this is the one I've had saved on my computer/phone wherever I go.
the starfish poem by loren eiseley
One day, a man was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a young man that was reaching down, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.
He came closer and called out "Good Morning! May I ask what it is you are doing?"
The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.
To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."
Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possible make a difference!"
At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, threw it into the ocean and said, "I made a difference to that one!"
I hope that next time, if you ever feel like you're not making a difference, you can come back to this poem and know that even despite it sometimes feeling like and seeming like you aren't, you still are.
No matter how big or small.
The tiny little things, end up making up the big things in life.
Keep going and keep at it.
Because, it matters.
Sending you BIG love today & always!
My whole heart, ♡
